Hans Hulsbosch

Hans Hulsbosch is a renowned Australian graphic designer. He is recognized for his work done to setup many of Australia’s leading brand identities, such as Woolworths, Virgin Australia and Qantas. Over the past two decades his name has become a brand identity itself, identified with quality designs and business solutions.

Hulsbosch grew up in Valkenswaard in The Netherlands. In the late 1960s and early 1970s, he began his professional career as he started to work as packaging designer for Willem II. Afterwards he moved to Amsterdam where he joined Ten Cate Bergmans, a leading design group. In 1975, he relocated to Wellington, New Zealand with his wife. There Hans provided his services in several advertising agencies. In the late 1970s, Hulsbosch decided to move to Sydney, Australia. An emerging advertising agency Clemenger BBDO hired him as a creative director of the company. As he gained experience from these jobs, it helped him establish his own design firm ‘HULSBOSCH, Communication by Design’. It was founded in 1982, and located in Sydney.

Han’s company is responsible for developing designs for most of of the Australia’s iconic brands. His major works include the creation of identity of the Qantas that is ‘flying kangaroo’, Masters Home Improvement, The MLC ‘Nest Egg’, Nylex and Foxtel and The Kidney Foundation. Hulbosch is responsible for creating strategically effective brand identities. It helps its clients understand the business challenges and offers creative business solutions to their problems. The primary goal of the firm is to offer service for brand management, create corporate identity and product identity, advertising and digital branding. Besides creating corporate identity, Hans and his company also lent their expertise in designing packaging for many of Australia’s leading brands. The brands included UV Triple Guard, Windex, Dettol, Disprin, Huggies for Kimberly-Clark and Kleenex Tissues.

The present clients of Hans’ firm include Rebel Sport, Virgin Australia, Royal Caribbean International, Aspen Pharmacare, NSW Art Gallery, Volvo, Sydney Conventions & Exhibition Centre and Woolworths. The countless national and international awards that the company has won are the testimony of Hans’ remarkable leadership and splendid design skills. Hulsbosch was presented numerous international advertising and design awards to honor its contribution to advertising industry. While Hans was working for Clemenger BBDO from 1979 – 1982, he designed identities for Tia Maria, Pizza Hut, Hoover and Campari and earned a major global advertising award. At the Cannes Design Lion Awards, the identity his company designed for Qantas was selected as one of the 10 best identities in the world. Eventually, his work was recognized in United States as it received a Mobius Award. Woolworth’s identity was ranked as one of the top 5 rebrands in the world by Brandchannel in 2008. According to Brand Finance analysis, Woolworths rebranding by Hulsbosch increased its popularity and jumped 50 spots ahead in the list of Australia’s top brands.

Hans is deemed the only designer in Australia to receive the prestigious Telstra Small Business ‘Entrepreneur of the Year’ Award. The Telstra Best Small Business Award was also awarded to his firm. Besides, the company received a Mobius Certificate for Outstanding Creativity and the Australian Marketing Institute Award for Marketing Excellence. In 2010 and 2012, Hulsbosch was able to garner the Adnews Specialist Agency of the Year Award. Currently Hans Hulsbosch also holds the position of a creative director at V Australia Airlines Pty Ltd.
